There are many reasons The Barstow School is ranked as the #1 best K-12 private /independent school in Kansas City. The list begins with the welcoming community created among students, families, faculty and staff. Teachers, division directors and administrators work hard to create a place where everyone finds their strength and finds their place, even though that means different things to different students. They may find their place in their classrooms, or on an athletic team, or in the arts, sciences, and humanities. Because of its intentionally small size, students are able to build relationships with teachers and counselors where they are truly known, and where their interests and talents are encouraged. From preschool starting at age 2 1/2 through upper school, students learn STEAM skills applied across the curriculum so learning isn't just from books and screens; it's hands-on activities that teaches them how to problem-solve, communicate, collaborate and think critically and independently. Barstow has an outstanding middle and upper school debate program, a robotics team that builds service and leadership alongside STEM skills, a dedicated STEAM learning center, inclusive and competitive sports teams where everyone gets the chance to play, and it's college prep and college counseling program is simply the best in the metro. Founded in 1884, the School's mission remains to promote sound scholarship and provide symmetrical development of mind, body, and character. It's a simple process to inquire, apply and enroll. But there are limited openings in select grades every year, so it's best to work with the admission department as soon as you schedule your first Open House visit.
