When we enrolled our son in French Broad River Academy for 6th grade, he was not happy about it. He''s a homebody - a smart kid who loves his video games and was not interested in anything that involved risk or discomfort. We knew FBRA would push him, and honestly, that''s exactly why we chose it.It has not always been easy. There were hard stretches, especially at first - getting used to the homework and outdoor activities. But watching him do things I genuinely didn''t think he''d ever do - canoe rapids, rock climb, ski, travel to Costa Rica without any contact with his family - has been one of the most rewarding things I''ve witnessed as a parent. And it''s not just the adventures. He plans his days, packs his own gear, manages his homework independently, and takes responsibility for his actions. These are not small things for a middle schooler.The staff is exceptional. They have a gift for keeping this age group in check, and anyone who''s spent time around middle school boys knows that''s no small feat. Misbehavior gets addressed immediately and consistently, but it''s never just about discipline. They genuinely teach these kids to be good people. To support each other. To work as a team.My son said, when we was asked what advice he''d give a new FBRA student, that "It''s going to be really hard to canoe together or get through an overnight trip if you''re not getting along. So try to get along with everyone." I think that shows he''s learning things that will serve him for life.Learning to work through difficulty and come out proud of what you''ve accomplished is the most incredible gift for a kid at this age. We wanted his middle school years to be full of adventure and growth, not spent on the sidelines. French Broad River Academy has delivered that and then some.

FBRA is amazing! My son has been attending since 6th grade. The teachers are truly phenomenal. It has exceeded all my expectations and I feel like I gave my son such a gift by sending him here. Who knew that the middle school years would be the best years of parenting.

French Broad River Academy is a remarkable school, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.Administratively, FBRA is one of the most competently run institutions I''ve encountered. Off days, school events, communications: all of it is thoughtfully organized with both students and parents in mind. Nothing feels needlessly complicated. What makes this even more impressive is that this same organization routinely brings around 120 middle schoolers out on canoes on the river, skiing, to Costa Rica, into the wilderness etc. The ambition and the execution are equally matched, and that balance feels rare.As a parent of a son, the boys'' school environment has been one of the most meaningful aspects of our experience. Strong male role models aren''t just present here; they''re foundational. Boys are already encountering, or soon will encounter, toxic online figures and distorted ideas of masculinity. They need something clear and healthy to counter that. More than discipline or opportunity, they need close, visible contact with good men living well: men who show up with integrity, engage thoughtfully, and invest in their communities. At FBRA, that example is woven into daily life in a way that''s genuinely hard to find elsewhere.Our family has spent on expensive ski lessons, camps, private instruction, and outdoor programs. What FBRA delivers within its tuition has surpassed all of it. The instruction is personalized, the educators genuinely understand middle school boys, and the depth of what''s offered doesn''t fully show up in the price tag.The school also handles the harder stuff with real skill. My son navigated the usual middle school social challenges, and the faculty response was exceptional: consistent, humane, and grounded in building confidence. Students are given space to express their needs, privately and publicly, without losing accountability. My son was supported, encouraged, and lifted up in ways that mattered.Academically, FBRA keeps learning relevant and alive, but what stood out most was how teachers helped my son discover what genuinely excites him. He''ll be attending an out of state boarding high school this fall, and FBRA had a real hand in that. His experiences here gave him something authentic to speak to in interviews, not manufactured, but lived.For context: I have no affiliation with the administration. Both my son and daughter were fortunate enough to attend the French Broad River Academy. I cannot say enough about this program, its staff, and the positive impact it continues to have on my children. They were incredibly prepared to excel in their Honors and AP classes in high school. The outdoor and international programming stretched my children in numerous ways. They learned the invaluable skills of teamwork, leadership, and critical thinking. They pushed themselves to go outside of their comfort zone in various scenarios and gained confidence and compassion that will serve them for a lifetime. As current college students, many achievements and celebrations can be traced back to the guidance and opportunities they experienced at The French Broad River Academy, and for that, I am forever grateful.

My son graduated from FBRA 5 years ago. He learned to be organized, to work with others, and to accomplish tasks; and he grew tremendously as an academic student. He also became more comfortable in the outdoors and developed a passion for skiing that has only grown since his middle school years. I am super grateful that we made the decision to send him to FBRA.

I have two girls who have/are attending the girls school. It has been a great fit for our family. The teachers are outstanding and really teach to the whole child. The academics are challenging, but teachers meet the student where she is. The outdoor portion provides amazing experiences and opportunities to grow and learn outside the classroom. Would highly recommend it.

We have been extremely pleased with both the boy's and girls' programs at French Broad River Academy. The teachers passionately lead the students in academics and outside education, based on the principles of the school - learning, service, and leadership. Our children have grown emotionally, and academically, and built lifelong confidence that they will carry with them throughout their lives. I can't recommend FBRA enough as a fantastic choice for middle school!

This has been a most excellent experience for our son. He is excelling academically and is so interested in the subject matter that they work on in class. The teachers are extraordinary, both in the classroom and out in the field. Their leadership and mentorship is what really sets this school apart from other options.

The teachers and staff passionately execute FBRA's goals of serving the whole child, having an incredible outdoor experiential model, and setting high academic standards. I am consistently amazed at how much the school accomplishes each week fitting a quality academic education into such a robust agenda. Our children learn executive functioning skills (public speaking, typing, conflict resolution, etc), social-emotional skills, and outdoor skills (paddling, hiking, skiing, etc) and gain an understanding and appreciation for community service and environmental issues. It is incredible to watch my girls take full ownership of so many responsibilities such as packing their gear for overnight camping trips, monitoring and completing homework, and advocating for themselves and the community. They have strong connections with each teacher through the unique experience of having the same teachers in the academic, music, and outdoor classrooms. FBRA is truly a unique school that provides an atmosphere that elevates both academic and real-life learning!
