My 18 year old son attends Stewart Home and School, a year round private boarding school, home and college for persons with intellectual disabilities. It never closes and accepts students as young as 12 years old until age 92. It is owned by 5+ generations of the Dr Stewart families and is the "Harvard of Special Needs Colleges" the finest school/home/community of its kind in the world. Settled in a gorgeous , historic, scenic 800 acre campus, each student has his own room grouped in dormitories of up to 20 with a house parent separated by men on one side of campus, women on the other, and the medical center, riding academy, gym, school buildings and pavilion centrally located to all. The students are comfortable in their daily routines of 8 45 minute classes per day plus evening activities and weekend activities. Electives include art, Sciiemces, computers, acting, yoga, piano, choir and many more. There is even a special daily program for the Senior Cotizens. The students are safe in this Kentucky paradise to walk to and from their classrooms and dormitories and electives independently. There are semi independent students who are happy to assist those that need more guidance. Many of the jobs done on campus are completed by students and many other students have jobs nearby in the community where school buses deliver them back and forth. Stewart Hone School is very serious about Special Olympic Sports and has buses with coaches, uniforms, school photographer and overnight trips for State Championships. My son loves Softball, Soccer, Swimming, Bowling, Tennis and Equitation. There are many more sports and activities. He works out in the Gym 45 min per day, dances several times a week, often to a live band and goes to church nearby with other students on Sundays. I visit often and skype daily. He loves acting on stage in their annual Family Weekend Performances in May. Stewart Home School is more than I ever dreamed possible and is run by wonderful people. I highly recommend that you consider allowing your child to visit here, a safe place where they can enjoy life, learn, make many friends, become independent and live the rest of their lives happily in a loving family atmosphere once parents can no longer offer a similar enriching lifestyle. This is a place for special persons who are not a danger to themselves or others, and for students who range in intellectual abilities of PreK through GED and beyond. A special place for special people.
