Our son thrived so well at The University Cooperative School (U Co-up School) since Kindergarten in the pandemic. His love and passion of learning is inspiring because of school and the community. The teachers are superb - skilled, caring and meet every child at their own level. The community welcomed us, just like our family would! Childhood is a journey, not a race. We really wish every child in the world could experience childhood at U Co-op School because they deserve it and the world needs more U Co-op School!

Our family has loved this school. The outdoor education program is amazing and the project base learning has kept our child engaged and loving school.

Our child is just finishing up her Pre-K year at University Cooperative School, and what a year''s it''s been. The kids are exposed to music, Capoeira, visual and performing arts, and more. They indulge in cooking projects, explore nature with outdoor play every day, and go on many field trips learning to navigate our city. They interact with the other grades, recognize other cultures and norms, and welcome families to share what is unique about them.All that said, what really stood out to me was not just that the teachers guided our kids with enthusiasm, expertise, and love (which they absolutely did); but they also supported the families. They lent a kind ear, provided knowledge and resources, and lent relevant moral and physical support as our kids went through their ups and downs throughout the year. Beyond the amazing teachers, we also feel like we belong to a real community at U Co-op where the faculty, staff, and families care for each other. Finally, to briefly address the Cooperative aspect of the school, the school needs are varied and there are many different ways to fulfill a "family job" and still meet your other work schedule. They welcome families to participate in their child''s experience during this time that can go by all too quickly, but ultimately you participate when it meets your needs and wants.

Our family has been at University Cooperative School for 10yrs - my 15yr old attended K-5th grade, and I currently have a 4th grader and my youngest is in PreK. We are incredibly grateful for this school, the holistic education it''s provided our children and the community that has been the anchor for our family life. The teachers are excited about what they teach, care deeply for the students. With enthusiasm for their subjects and the freedom and support they need to follow that enthusiasm they make engaging, responsive, project based learning the norm all through the program. The kids stay excited about learning, comfortable asking questions and learn to ask for what they need as a learner.Our modern lives are designed in a way that is isolating and can wearus down with the load of demands of parenting- but the model of cooperative school (that''s very flexible/understands we work too!) means that you can build real relationships and community in a society where that can be incredibly hard. At U co-op our children end up with so many loving adults who know and care for them - I can''t overstate how valuable that is. Especially when life brings rough seasons or crisis. We know each other''s kids and support each other through this parenting journey. The nurturing, adventurous environment helps kids be comfortable and confident in themselves -quirks and struggles included. My kids love going to school and I love the joyful childhood it has given them.

They started introducing the incoming class to the environment during the application process (yes, it started there - purposeful!) as well as at the start of the year. While Pre-K is "student led", it's clear from the daily communication that the teachers proactively use student-chosen topics as a foothold to engage various "hard" topics like science, reading, and math. The teachers were also super empathetic and helpful when we had some behavioral things happen during the year.The community has also been great. Compared to our past schools, U Coop stands out in how parents willingly engage with each other and welcome new families. As it's a coop, there are plenty of opportunities to engage with the entire school. There are also plenty of regular events (like all school sing on Fridays), special events (like mud fest), as well as parent organized events (like parent meet ups), and an active WhatsApp group for each class for parents to support each other. It's not one size fits all, but there's definitely a lot of options to engage depending on your style and what you can manage. I can also be working full time and not be able to go to all the events and know I'm not being judged.We are super happy here and would highly recommend the school!.

I have two children who attended University Cooperative School. One graduated, and one is entering 4th grade. My eldest child started at University Cooperative School in kindergarten and graduated from 5th grade with a strong joy for learning, a passion for diverse subjects, and a deep sense of confidence. The emphasis on social-emotional learning, balanced with an experiential approach to learning, helped foster a well-rounded experience for my child. They entered middle school feeling prepared academically and socially and have continued to thrive. The school offers the unique opportunity to participate in school activities as much or as little as you are able. The community offers support for the child as well as the entire family. If you are looking for a supportive, joyful space for your child and family, I highly recommend U Co-op.

We've been part of the University Cooperative School community for approximately three years, and it's been a truly wonderful experience. The teachers are deeply caring and responsive, and our child has grown not only academically but also socially and emotionally. The school fosters a strong sense of connection, creativity, and curiosity-we feel so grateful to be part of this community.

We have loved U-Coop for both of our children! They have gained an academically sound foundation while still having fun! As kids should. Everyone talks about the amazing school trips, the community, the bike program and the ski program all of which are so awesome and so needed for kids in today's world, but it feels important to note that my oldest has seamlessly transitioned into public middle school prepared and ready. When my youngest graduates from UCOOP, I know the same will be true for him. I cannot speak more highly of the experience, creativity, intention and love the teachers bring to their job and each student. The curriculum is dynamic; it's participatory, experiential and meaningful. It is adventurous! Like most parents, I want my kids to be prepared, resilient, compassionate, and well-rounded. It feels hard to provide ALL the experiences needed to foster these ideals alone as a parent. I really feel like Ucoop has helped to support this type of growth in my children, and I am so thankful for it!

I have two kids who went to University Cooperative School. My youngest is now in 4th grade, and my oldest graduated. This is a school where kids get to be kids, get dirty, make a lot of art, be brave and present their own research, adventure outside, and gain resilience inside and outside the classroom. I have two very different kids with different learning styles, and both thrived. My oldest has moved on to middle school, earning high honor roll in multiple terms. My youngest found a love of acting and has joined an after-school performance program even in addition to the plays she already gets to do at school. Social-emotional learning is high on the list here. Kids learn about their emotions and navigate big social challenges. My oldest learned many of her lessons on how to deal with friendship and difficult social dynamics in middle school. She is often a strong advocate for her friends and helps her group navigate their new tween/teen social dynamics. This school is about nurturing the whole child. Only when children are seen, heard, and have space to be themselves and find comfort will they achieve the kind of academic success that parents hope for.

My kids went to University Co-op from kindergarten through 5th grade, and even though it's a few years later now, our experience still stands out in my mind as one of the most positive and impactful I could have given them. The teachers at U Co-op are not only fantastic at what they do, but they are also loving, supportive, and respectful of my child as an individual. They really do live their motto, "Childhood is a journey, not a race," and my kids left U Co-op having established deep relationships with their teachers, friends, and their friends' parents. They were fully prepared for middle school and continue to expect learning to be fun and engaging with just the right amount of challenge. U Co-op taught them how to use their voice for themselves and others as well. I can't think of a better place to start off an educational journey.

I am the father of a student who went to UCo-op starting in Kindergarten (there was no Pre-K at that time) and graduated after 5th grade. As a family we consider our time there to be an absolute joy from start to finish, a rich and deeply emotional experience that has lasting positive effects for everyone in our household. The community that is built and continues to evolve at the school is remarkable. We made life-long friends while we were there and our class still gets together regularly for meet-ups, camping adventures, and even does some international travel together. Co-op life is not for everyone, the time investment for parents is not insignificant, but if the family is engaged and shows up and puts in the time that is asked of the families who join, then it is a self-fulfilling engine which makes for a better environment for learning for the child, a more connected community and a significantly more clear view for parents of the child's day-to-day. But it does require that commitment from the family, and so I always encourage people coming into the community to think very carefully before engaging with a Co-op lifestyle. If you can't commit to that which is asked of each family in terms of time and support then perhaps Co-op life is not a great fit for your family. That self-fulfilling engine only runs if everyone is engaged together in the process. The teachers at UCo-op are among the most dedicated, thoughtful, engaged, and mindful people I have ever met. They care so deeply for the kids, the process of teaching and learning, and the community, it is inspiring to see and a joy to engage with. We see this again in how the community continues to show up and connect with the staff years after the family has left the school. I am certain that I will know and interact with the staff for the rest of my life. The school recently did an amazing re-envisioning of the lower floor of the school and it has set them up for continued evolution of the Co-op, with new and improved spaces for learning, play, admin, and more. I've had a tour and it's an incredible result. I truly wish that I had the opportunity to go through the UCo-op experience again with my kid, it has set him up with everything he needs for middle and high school and beyond and equipped him with a greater capacity to love, accept love, and thrive emotionally. If Co-op life is the right fit for your family then there is no better option in Seattle than University Cooperative School.

My husband and I cannot recommend U Co-op enough. It's really a special place. At Co-op, individuality is genuinely celebrated rather than tamped down. Even after 10 years of our family being part of this school, my husband and I still find ourselves blown away by the teachers' and administrators' pure dedication to giving our children the most excellent education, childhood, and community. Our kids have felt academically supported and challenged AND have felt loved, heard, and respected!. Children seem to leave Co-op with a strong sense of self and they seem to thrive wherever they go. My husband has taught U Co-op grads in high school and has been impressed with their confidence and strong sense of self. Post Co-op my son attended a public middle school and now a public high school. It's been great to see how well-prepared he was for his subsequent schools thanks to the educational foundation provided by Co-op. They instilled in him a love of learning and a love of school in general. Our daughter will be graduating this spring. As she cried the other day about leaving Co-op, I comforted her and explained that her tears make sense because she knows what it's like to be loved unconditionally by an entire community from the children to the parents to the most loving, talented, and playful teachers. And she knows how to love them back. And now she gets to head off to middle school knowing: - What it's like to be respected, loved, and academically challenged. - How to respect others, how to love, how to be curious, how to ask for help from teachers, other parents, and classmates.- How to make mistakes and how to navigate tricky social situations because of the guidance from the teachers. And because of this school being a Co-op, our family is living with a shared community where we know the kids and the kids know us from our time assisting in the classroom, on epic trips, or simply playing games together. The Co-op will always be with her and always with us.

There is something special about the cooperative model. Parents and staff together in the trenches to make school happen outdoors, in the midst of a pandemic, revealed a lot of what the u-coop spirit is about. U-coop kids didn't just survive this incredibly challenging time for kids globally - they thrived. Being new to the school, we have never known the "normal" times, but what we have experienced is exceptional. The kids are engaged in constant learning in a joyful, playful way. The students are known and seen, not just by the teachers and students, but by the extended community as well. Initially, I was concerned about the commitment of a work shift in the classroom and a parent job, but it hasn't been overwhelming. The supportive community means you give what you can, and are suited to your abilities. And by being involved in the community, I truly know my children's friends and peers - their interests and their personalities. My daughter will happily take another parent's hand and tell them about her day. My son will earnestly discuss Minecraft with his friend's parents. I love these children - and in turn, my children have a village of parents who genuinely care about them. We are a part of something special and the real evidence is watching the kids - these are happy children. It's what struck me when we toured, and a big reason why we chose this school. Do you want happy, joyful children that are excited about learning? Because that's what you get. I don't think we could have picked a better school for our children, in Seattle - or elsewhere.

The University Cooperative School is a fabulous school where learning is nurtured in a hands on, integrated manner. You won't find kids sitting in rows filling out worksheets at this school. More likely you''ll find the kindergarten students engaged in creative writing and drawing (for instance about all the things a small piece of yarn could be), building with blocks, counting coins they have collected for a local pet store/animal shelter or skipping in front of the school when energy gets a little high. This is a place where children's learning, as well as their social/emotional development are both taken seriously. Teachers in the K-2 team work closely together, and also work with the 3-5 teachers to ensure continuity and a sense of community (for instance the kindergarten students have 3rd grade buddies who they look forward to doing fun activities with such as reading together and pancake breakfasts. Another great highlight of this school is the fantastic Spanish, Music and Art curriculum, my child skips home singing new songs (in English and in Spanish) and sharing her excitement about something she has created at school on a daily basis. The school uses Cowen Park for recess and many outdoor activities, but there's also a fantastic new "active space" and music room in the lower level of the school. Love this school!
