School Notes

  • Walden is a unique K-12 school with a commitment to helping students reach their highest potential. Maintaining high academic standards and behavioral expectations in an inclusive, supportive, collaborative, noncompetitive, and safe environment is at the heart of our program.
  • Our curriculum is developed using the most current brain-based research on best practices. We believe that learning is an ongoing process of discovery that results in a deeper understanding of global issues and concepts. Through our discussion- and project-based classes, students develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Our talented staff inspire students to persevere and experience the benefits of lifelong learning in an environment of mutual respect and accountability.
  • Founded in 2001 by Dr. Carol Mikulka as a nonprofit, nonsectarian, private, independent school, our community of learners respects and expects inquisitiveness, creativity, perseverance, motivation, and effort.
  • At Walden, learning is designed to spark curiosity, creativity, and confidence. Our curriculum combines academic rigor with hands-on exploration, ensuring every child builds a strong foundation in literacy, math, science, and social studies. Because our classrooms are multi-age, students learn at their own pace, revisiting and extending concepts as they grow. Each quarter is guided by a central Unit of Inquiry that connects subjects through meaningful themes and projects.

We wanted more for our daughter and that's why we chose Walden Community School. We wanted her to love learning and to be excited about going to school every day. On top of that, we wanted her to be safe and in an environment that would give her the freedom that she needs to express herself and learn from her peers. The curriculum is extraordinary and I'm constantly blown away by the critical thinking and creative writing skills that she's been developing at Walden.

Walden Community School provides a unique learning experience for students. Both of our children attend Walden. This is my son`s fifth year here and we couldn`t be happier. The personal attention and student to teacher ratio is hard to beat! The teachers are very passionate about their jobs and are great at motivating the kids to learn. Students can learn at their own pace. The curriculum is really interesting and keeps the kids engaged. Our kids love going to school and couldn't wait to get back as summer was coming to an end. We love Walden!

I have 5 children and am a Montessori teacher who stumbled upon Walden Community School by lucky chance. With an extremely low student:teacher ratio and a tailor-made curriculum of project-based learning, it is unlike any other school my family has ever experienced. The director's passion and staff's dedication to best learning practices is evident as students learn, aspire and achieve beyond what is typical in other school settings. The community is warm, inclusive, creative and constructively challenging, inspiring children to reach their fullest potential. I would highly recommend Walden to any families seeking an alternative learning environment.

Walden now has over 20 kids in Middle and High School (no elementary). This is a great school where the students get individualized / differentiated instruction. Students are motivated and encouraged to do the best they can. The school focuses on academics -- but also on the "whole child" -- their emotional, physical, academically and social needs.
