Located in Milton, Massachusetts, St. Agatha School serves a culturally and academically diverse population of over 600 students from 19 local communities. The school curriculum meets and exceeds the standards of the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and is moving toward incorporation of the National Core Curriculum standards in the present curriculum. The school is structured to meet the needs of students in the primary, intermediate and middle school grades. The primary curriculum (K1 through Grade 2) is literacy-based and all lessons are multi-sensory and interactive. In addition to a rich language arts program, formal lessons include daily Religion, Math, and Social Science classes. Student growth and development is enhanced through weekly Computer, Library, Physical Education, Music, Spanish, the Collins Writing Program, and Art are taught weekly at all grades, K1 through Grade 8. At this level, reading and writing specialists meet weekly with small groups to strengthen basic skills. An Early Childhood Coordinator works with teachers and parents to develop the daily curriculum, plan enrichment programs, and coordinate special events at this level. The joy of learning is present in classes throughout the school, but is most perhaps most evident at the primary level, where our young students share the joy of discovering something new each day. Daily lessons become more complex at the intermediate level (Grades 3-5), so students needing learning support outside of the classroom are serviced by the school鈥檚 Resource Department. Resource teachers include a licensed clinical therapist, a certified Wilson Phonics instructor and a certified Reading Specialist. These specialists partner with classroom teachers and parents to meet individual student needs. The Resource Department is designed to assist individuals and small groups in the classroom or resource room. This program ensures that any accommodations prescribed by Individual Education Plans (IEP) or 504 plans are met. Alpha-Smarts, and student word processors, are also available for use in the classrooms. At the intermediate level, more equipment, such as interactive whiteboards, and other multi-sensory resources, enhance the learning environment to ensure that all students can find success in St. Agatha School classrooms. At the middle school level (Grades 6-8), the curriculum is enriched with current events classes aimed at increasing students鈥� sense of social justice. Throughout the school year, students have visited organizations like Cradle to Crayons, Fr. Bill鈥檚 Place and My Brother鈥檚 Keeper. Middle School academic challenges are provided by the addition of relevant trade novels in literature in Grade 7, Algebra I in Grade 8, and daily experimentation in the school鈥檚 science lab. Although there are annually over 100 students in our junior high school, learners are grouped by interest and aptitude, so that many classes number less than 15 students. An after school HSTP study course is also offered to Grade 8 students each fall. More than 98% of St. Agatha School graduates are accepted at area parochial and independent middle or high schools of their choice. High schools report that many St. Agatha School graduates enter honors level courses in high school and achieve honor roll status in
their freshman year and beyond. In addition to our academics, St. Agatha School offers a variety of extra-curricular activities, such as: Peer Leadership, Mandarin Chinese, Paul Effman Music Band lessons, piano lessons, Drama Club, Chess Club, Knitting and Sewing Club, Lego Robotics Club, Voice Lessons, Jump Rope Club, Book Club, Voice Lessons, Grades 5-8 Boys and Girls Basketball Teams, Cheerleading, Floor Hockey, and Lego Club. Older students also provide daily programming for all classrooms via the school鈥檚 closed circuit television system. The faculty and staff of St. Agatha School are state certified to teach, and most have Masters Degrees in their assigned subject areas. The purpose of all activities at St. Agatha School is to ensure that all members of our community- qualified teachers, supportive parents, and happily engaged students- will collaborate to 鈥渆xcel in education and celebrate Christian values.鈥� Collaboration, cooperation and communication are the hallmarks of St. Agatha School.
